MapProjector not working

Description
Step 9 in the map projector tutorial: "Select the overlay from step (3)" does not work. In step 3 I created a file called "Cretaceous" as instructed. The open dialog in step 9 will not allow me to select it.
If I change the open selection from "All Readable Documents" to "All Documents" then I can select and open it, but nothing happens.
