EdGCM and GISS Development on OS X

1. Install Developer Tools and X11 (from your OS X Install CD/DVD)
2. Install Compilers
   1. Connect to EdGCM.columbia.edu Use SFTP(clients: CyberDuck, Fetch, or Transmit)
   2. Change to the /Users/Shared folder
   3. Download files
   4. Unzip ZIP files, double-click and mount ISO files, etc. Then install the packages
3. Install fink from http://fink.sf.net/
   • Enable unstable/main and unstable/crypto in /sw/etc/fink.conf (see fink FAQ on this topic and the fink.conf user guide)
4. Install the packages you want. Some suggestions:
   • fink install ncarg octave (for scientific software)
   • fink install svn-client (required)
   • fink install imagemagick (for batch image manipulation)
   • fink install tetex emacs22-carbon (for LaTeX and emacs)
